Job Summary: Under general supervision, provide support to Project Scientists in identification, characterization and detection of invasive viral pathogens in perennial crops with emphasis on grapevines, fruit trees, strawberry and sweet potato.
Independently use and implement a variety of molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid extractions from plant tissue using high throughput techniques, real-time and conventional RT-PCR, fluorometric DNA/RNA quantification, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, herbaceous host indices, and antibody and virus purification.
Collect and process samples from both field and greenhouse plants while minimizing cross-contamination. Work on UNIX based computers and files for data analysis, and assist in the development of Taqman-based assays.
Physical Demands: Perform repetitive work.
Lift and/or move lab/greenhouse/office related materials weighing up to 30 lbs.
Occasionally work in conditions of extreme temperatures, hot or cold.
Occasionally work in rugged field conditions where the ground is not level to collect sample plant material.
Enter areas that have been treated with pesticides and/or other chemicals, after re-entry period has passed.
Work Environment: Employee is personally responsible for following EH&S safety guidelines/instructions.
Work occasional overtime.
Work outside or in a greenhouse in hot and cold weather.
Valid California Driver License to drive to various work sites.

Minimum Qualifications: -Experience performing laboratory techniques: DNA/RNA isolation, RT-PCR, ELISA techniques, real time PCR.
-Experience working with plants and plant sampling techniques.
-Experience organizing a laboratory and documenting procedures and results accurately.
-Knowledge and technical training in plant pathogen diagnostics.
-Knowledge of and skills to adhere to diagnostic laboratory quality control procedures and standards.
-Knowledge of isolation techniques to minimize cross-contamination of samples both in the field and lab.
-Knowledge and skills using software tools for genome analysis, multiple alignments and Taqman primer/probe design including Vector NTI and Primer Express, and to assist in the evaluation and validation of new Taqman-based molecular assays.
-Skills with plant virus symptomatology on different hosts that are used for virus identification.
-Demonstrated skills to perform independent and critical thinking.
-Skills to multi-task, and work in a flexible manner under the pressure created in an active service/academic environment.
-Knowledge of and skills to adhere to diagnostic laboratory quality control procedures and standards
-Knowledge and skills to interpret data, recognize irregular or invalid results, troubleshoot assays and correct assay performance failures.
-Excellent record keeping skills and ability to respond quickly to requests for information.
-Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact and communicate, and to establish and maintain good rapport with a diverse group of staff, faculty, coworkers, administrators, and external contacts.
Preferred Qualifications: -Experience with PCR, RT-PCR and RT-qPCR to design primers/probes used in RT-PCR or RT-qPCR for the detection of viruses.
-Experience with Microsoft Excel and Access and laboratory information system.
-Skills to operate lab equipment including thermocyclers, gel electrophoresis equipment, spectrophotometers, bioanalyzer, ELISA plate washer and plate reader.
-Skills to transfer plant viruses from one plant to another by sap inoculation.
-Experience in the application of high-throughput sequencing for pathogen detection.
-Skills to perform assigned tasks efficiently, accurately and timely while meeting high expectations of successful performance and outcomes.
