Departmental Overview The Athletic Study Center provides holistic student development, academic support, and academic advising services to the student athlete population at UC Berkeley.
This position serves as Academic Support Coordinator for the academic development and success of student athletes. Responsibilities include general oversight, support and direction of the academic preparation and performance of student athletes. The academic profile and preparedness of many student-athletes often require additional academic support and learning resources to ensure academic success at the University. This position will provide guidance and support to Learning Specialists in the management and support of their respective student caseloads. This position will collaborate with the Academic Advisor from the Athletic Study Center, who provides advising services, and the Director of Student-Athlete Academic Development. The position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Student Athlete Development with a dotted line to the Assistant Director of Academic Support.
Utilizing specialized expertise, develops and manages academic support plans for a caseload of student athletes to enhance their learning capabilities in groups, or 1 on 1, for a wide range of issues, including: discipline; writing; course-based (not necessarily remedial); study strategies; deconstructing a syllabus.
Collaborates with other ASC staff to develop, implement, and deliver multi-format academic support plans to enhance the learning and teaching process for academically at-risk student athletes.
May provide guidance to Academic Student Advisers on pedagogic issues affecting students in their departments.
Trains and provides guidance to Learning Specialists, undergraduate and graduate student tutors, who teach, advise, and mentor student athletes.
Oversees and provides guidance on the student caseloads of all Learning Specialists at the Athletic Study Center.
Applies advanced knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations to determine the nature and extent of student academic support program services applied to student athletes.
Administers, collects, and analyzes learning assessments for incoming student athletes. Compiles assessment results for review and input into student athlete database.
Acts as department liaison to the Disabled Students Program (DSP). Assists student athletes in the DSP testing and accommodations processes.
Works with Athletic Study Center systems analyst to develop and maintain Learning Specialist section of student athlete database.
Establishes and maintains partnerships with campus departments and units on outreach, orientation, academic strategy, and enrichment workshops, community building events, and activities.
Advanced knowledge in theoretical concepts of adult learning. Knowledge on methodologies to enhance student success.
Advanced knowledge of learning needs of academically at-risk student athletes.
Advanced knowledge of specific learning styles, linguistic issues.
Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution.
Knowledge of academic curricula.
Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
Knowledge of NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.
Skills in judgment and decision-making.
Advanced knowledge on research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific).
Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
