Departmental Overview UC Berkeley's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics is top-ranked worldwide for its outstanding contributions to questions in agriculture and resource policy, development economics, environmental and energy economics, and international trade.
ARE's graduate program trains students to conduct important and innovative research in agricultural and resource economics, and to become leaders in the economics profession. Graduates have gone on to teaching and research positions at many of the world's top universities, including Columbia, Oxford, Stanford, MIT, Michigan, LSE, Berkeley, Wisconsin, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, UC San Diego and others. Some of our distinguished alumni include Harvard economist John Kenneth Galbraith and Middle East envoy Philip Habib.
ARE also offers the undergraduate major in Environmental Economics and Policy. Students in the major learn the fundamentals of microeconomics applied to problems of the environment, natural resource and international development. Students completing the EEP major have gained admission to top graduate programs, and have gone on to pursue careers in investment, finance, government, academics, nonprofit organizations, law and public policy.
Responsibilities This position will assist Professor Gordon Rausser with research in agricultural and environmental economics. In addition, this position provides administrative support for Professor Rausser's conferences, editorial responsibilities, preparation of publications, and e-mails. Professor Rausser's research includes agricultural public policy and markets, political economy of public policies, natural resources economics, and commodity markets.
Assists with editing and submission of academic articles
Functions as a resource regarding research on complex agricultural economic discrepancies and serves as a liaison between different academic bodies
Assist with Professor Rausser's editorial responsibilities
Assist with research conference planning
Maintains and coordinates Professor Rausser's schedule, including travel coordination
Maintains organized files and records in both hard and digital formats
Participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures and guidelines
Gathers and analyzes financial, economic and other resource data
Prepares reports or analyses of operational activities, evaluation of current and proposed services, etc.
Monitors and purchases office supplies
Excellent word processing and editing skills
Proficiency in spreadsheets and data analysis
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing
Outstanding organizational skills and ability to multitask with demanding time frames
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and respond to sensitive issues accordingly
High school diploma and/or equivalent combination of education/experience
Experience working cooperatively with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
Experience with Google Suite and other web-based platforms
