The University of Puget Sound seeks a visionary and dynamic Director to lead the Puget Sound School of Music!
A comprehensive program within a nationally recognized liberal arts college, the Puget Sound School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Bachelor of Music in Composition, Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Business, Bachelor of Arts in Music, and Master of Arts in Teaching. The School hosts three choral ensembles, four instrumental ensembles (including a jazz orchestra), an opera theater, and chamber music groups in strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. It is a point of pride that nearly 20% of the student body participates in music ensembles, with students from across all disciplines performing alongside more than one hundred music majors and minors. These ensembles, along with recitals by students and faculty, contribute richly to more than 150 performances per year. The Director will lead a faculty of ten tenure-line colleagues and an artist-in-residence who are poised for partnership in moving the School forward in educating musicians for the 21st century. They are joined by some 25 affiliate faculty and seven professional staff, as well as a robust Community Music program. The Puget Sound School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
In partnership with the faculty, the duties of Director include:
Serving as the senior academic and administrative officer for the School of Music
Providing strategic and operational direction for the department
Managing departmental activities and programs
Recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty members, affiliate artists, and administrative staff
Promoting the School of Music to internal and external audiences, potential students, donors, professional and community partners, and the community
Teaching courses in an area or areas of expertise (with release time from teaching for administrative responsibilities)
Sustaining scholarly and/or creative professional development and service to the Music profession
Overseeing curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation
Engagement in campus governance and service
Doctoral degree in Music preferred, or equivalent experience in music or other arts; demonstrated leadership effectiveness, with preference for five or more years of administrative experience in higher education, a department or school of music, or equivalent arts organization; demonstrated teaching effectiveness, and commitment to undergraduate teaching and liberal arts education; distinct record of artistic and/or scholarly professional development and professional stewardship; demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion; evidence of active contribution to professional music associations preferred.
Appointment:Director, School of Music, tenure-line, to begin July 2020 for 2020-21 academic year.
