Develop assays and protocols for PI approval and design experimental approaches for research projects. Perform a wide range of sophisticated assays. Make significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts. May include troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments.
These will require basic tissue culture, and/or cell separation methods, and laboratory methods/techniques associated with genetics and molecular biology such as: high-throughput genotyping, array-based resequencing, quantitative and qualitative analyses, as well as other functional and enzymatic assays.
Extensive work with robotics equipment will be required.
Careful records of all experiments performed and assessment of quality of data generated is critical.
Responsible for assigned daily research projects.
Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret results, e.g. reading controls, evaluate results.
Order equipment and supplies, interface with vendors.
Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions. Works independently.
Guide, direct and facilitate problem solving for entry-level lab members on day-to-day problems with more challenging research assays.
Make scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity.
Collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments.
Apply published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI.
May scientifically contribute to writing of manuscripts and grants.
Process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications.
This position will operate basic laboratory equipment and uses various software applications packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
This position will also prepare solutions and reagents, order materials and supplies, maintain sterile ready-to-use glassware, keep inventories of lab stocks, maintain laboratory equipment, and conduct routine radiation surveys.
Must keep accurate and up-to-date records of experiments performed.
Evaluates equipment performance and maintenance
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. One (1) year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies, and laboratory experience gained through class work: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, microbiology and/or genetics.
Formal coursework and laboratory experience in genetics is highly desirable.
Additional relevant laboratory experience acquired through undergraduate research, extracurricular activities, or summer employment is desirable.
