The Cliffe lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) reactivation, starting July 2019. The lab specialist will work closely with the PI to use virology, molecular biology and cell biology techniques to study chromatin changes during HSV reactivation from latency. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, propagating and titrating virus stocks, routine tissue culture, isolation of primary neurons from mice, ocular mouse infections, general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-PCR) and chromatin-immunoprecipitation. The lab specialist will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes training of other personnel, maintaining mouse colonies, ordering supplies, preparing stock solutions, organizing and maintaining virus stocks and assisting the PI with environmental health and safety compliance.
The successful candidate must have a B.S. degree in biology, or a related field, and at least two years of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Virology and/or Molecular Biology, prior animal work and experience with tissue culture techniques.
