We are seeking a highly independent and innovative scientist to join the Cellular Screening team in the Human Assay Technologies group at Vertex. You will be self-motivated with a strong foundation in cell biology and have experience with cell-based phenotypic assays, including work with complex cell types such as iPSC-derived and primary cells. In this position you will be responsible for developing human disease-relevant cell assays to understand and address the underlying cause of serious life-threatening diseases. Target identification/validation and mechanism of action studies using innovative approaches and technologies will be required. Experience with miniaturized assays (384 or 1536) and the knowledge of multiplex assay platforms, HTS workflows, data analysis, and data reporting is necessary. The understanding of robust statistical analysis, multi-parametric data analysis and basic command line programming is a plus. Do you have a track record for innovation in cellular screening? We'd love to talk to you.
The Cellular Screening group supports small molecule hit discovery and optimization for all disease areas in the Vertex drug discovery portfolio at the Boston site. As a member of our team you will be on multiple discovery project teams.
Lead the development of cell-based assays for small molecule discovery as a key member of discovery project teams
Miniaturize and adapt cell-based assays to automated screening systems
Independently lead and execute large-scale small molecule screens for hit identification, as well as lower-throughput assays for support of medicinal chemistry and lead optimization
Analyze, critically interpret and present data to cross-functional project teams, and recommend courses of action based on datasets and discussions with biologists and chemists
Propose and develop innovative approaches to phenotypic screening and small molecule discovery based on the latest technologies and publications in the field
Be a key member of the Cellular Screening team and serve as a strong representative on interdisciplinary project teams
PhD (or equivalent degree) in a relevant discipline (Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry) and 2-5 years of productive, relevant industry or postdoctoral experience in cell-based assays, phenotypic screening, or high throughput approaches to lead discovery and characterization
Deep understanding of Cell Biology and expertise in cell-based assay development and high-throughput screening
Experience with screening data analysis and small molecule drug discovery
Self-motivation, independence, organization, effective communication and presentation skills; adept in solving/troubleshooting complex problems as well as the ability to navigate a dynamic work environment

About Vertex Pharmaceuticals
Vertex is a global biotechnology company that invests in scientific innovation to create transformative medicines for people with serious and life-threatening diseases. We discovered and developed the first medicines to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis (CF), a rare, life-threatening genetic disease. In addition to clinical development programs in CF, Vertex has more than a dozen ongoing research programs focused on the underlying mechanisms of other serious diseases.
Founded in 1989 in Cambridge, Mass., Vertex today has research and development sites and offices around the world. For several consecutive years, Science magazine has named Vertex one of its Top Employers in the life sciences.
