The Biosystems and Biomaterials Division at NIST is seeking to hire a PhD-level automation scientist or engineer. The person hired for this position will help to lead the development of automation-based methods to create a measurement infrastructure for engineering biology. They will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop and program new automation methods and to facilitate rapid and flexible adoption of automation systems for a variety of biological measurements.
PhD in engineering, biology, chemistry, physics or related field.
Experience working with laboratory automation systems
Experience operating and developing methods for automated liquid handling systems
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise with liquid handling equipment and other general laboratory equipment
Experience with programming languages used for scientific data analysis, including, for example, Python, R, MatLab
Basic working knowledge of cell biology or microbiology
Demonstrated problem-solving skills, and the ability to identify, manage, and overcome technical hurdles
Good communications, laboratory, and organizational skills; the ability to work independently and with a multi-disciplinary team
Hands-on experience with high-throughput workflows and working with liquid handling robots and integrated platforms; Adept at utilizing automation to assist with complicated or lengthy workflows
Experience with liquid handler programming with the Hamilton Venus language
Experience with scheduling software for automated laboratory systems
Experience integrating Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) with automated systems
Experience with Statistical Process Control, Design of Experiment, or Machine Learning techniques
Hands-on experience handling large scale data streams
Experience working in or with micro-biology or cell-biology laboratories
Experience in cell and tissue culture, high-throughput screening, assay development, and other biological laboratory workflows
Ability to quickly adopt and apply new methods and technologies
Experience managing and coordinating projects
US citizenship preferred
Additional Salary Information: This is a typical NIST postdoctoral scientist starting rate.
