The Principal Electrical Engineer designs electrical systems by developing and testing components, ensuring that they meet company and industry standards and codes. This role will create, test and oversee the building of electrical equipment including motors, communication systems, and more. This individual must understand the materials and methods normally used within the assigned discipline and will be responsible for design development and transition to production of aesthetically-pleasing, innovative, cost-effective and reproducible designs of electrical components for lab automation equipment. This includes prototyping new designs as well as testing design changes to existing product line and looking for new ways to make devices more energy efficient or innovative. The Principal Electrical Engineer will also provide support of the drawings, produce Bill of Material and data sheets, and provide effective interdepartmental communication and adherence to procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Engineering
Apply standard design principles and theories to complete assignments. Utilize technical manuals to ensure compliance with company policies and applicable standards and codes such as ANSI, PFI, and ASME.
Ensure compliance with required design safety factors, tolerances, and specifications.
Evaluate electrical systems, products, components, and applications by designing and conducting research programs. Apply knowledge of electricity and materials.
Compile data and perform dimensional and routine calculations required for the preparation of drawings. Read and understand orthographic (2D) and/or isometric (3D) designs and supplier/manufacturer drawings.
Makes required changes, additions, and/or revisions, as directed by immediate supervisor.
Apply internal project management strategies and adhere to deadlines.
Participate in developing project plans, test plans, and writing test reports. Assist with creating, maintaining, and revising product project plans and effectively communicate project deadlines.
Devise testing methods and properties to confirm the functionality of electrical components and systems.
Create product documentation including solid modeling of components and assemblies, technical drawings, BOMs, etc.
Communicate engineering information across teams and departments to facilitate successful completion of large-scale projects.
Create and maintain wiring schematics and board layouts for new R7D as well as legacy product.
Work with Executive Team to improve general business practices and create efficient (leaner) workflow.
Manufacturing
Generate acceptable profit margin through supply choices and recommendations.
Assist in generating improved profit margin on existing product line.
Develop manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for building and assembling electrical components; solicit observations from operators.
Assure product quality by designing electrical testing methods, testing finished products, and system capabilities.
Prepares product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
Generate wire schematics and necessary assembly documentation for production.
Supervise the manufacturing and installation of electrical equipment, components, and systems.
Work with Assembly Technicians and Service Technicians to improve quality control process and assembly procedures.
Assist with equipment and software QC as needed.
Software
Liaise with the department team members on new product development and legacy product troubleshooting.
Customer Service
Troubleshoot to solve unforeseen problems with product design or implementation.
Assist with basic customer service as a last resort responder (phone support).
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
4+ years of relevant experience.
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or similar field (or equivalent) is preferred.
Proficient in the use of Solidworks, AutoCAD and other computer-aided design software applications, as well as Microsoft Office.
Product design experience required.
Electrical or controls experience required.
Experience working with multiple disciplines including mechanical design, layout, manufacturing, external suppliers, and service providers.
Ability to write clearly about highly technical subject matter.
Ability to read and comprehend detailed specifications, data sheets, and supplier correspondence.
Ability to interpret standards, specifications, procedures, drawings, etc.; mechanical aptitude.
Implementation of engineering software platform including gathering information and identifying processes.
Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, and policies.
Ability to positively impact company systems and procedures related to COGs, lean manufacturing, and assembly training.
General office equipment and computer knowledge (Microsoft Office, Google Suite) and proficient web-based skills.
Strong networking skills, written and oral communication skills, decisiveness, effective listener, creative and innovative, analytical thinking, organization, and time management.
Self-starter with good organizational skills.
Must be able to function in a deadline driven environment. Must have the ability to set deadlines and schedules to complete goals on time.
Must have the ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects at once.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, reach, push, pull, and make coordinated movements of the fingers for using a keyboard.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds for product testing.
Combination of general office and machine shop environment.
