Calico is seeking an experienced and motivated Lab Automation Engineer to join our laboratory automation team. This position will support internal research groups, migrating assays and processes from bench-top to automated liquid handling systems and integrated robotic platforms. Assay migration is highly collaborative and the candidate must be able to work with scientists of all levels, have a keen attention to detail, and effectively communicate progress and results. Above all, the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems while maintaining a positive attitude is critical to success in this position.
Significant experience programming automated liquid handling systems (e.g. Tecan EVO or Fluent, Agilent Bravo, Beckman Coulter FX/NX, Hamilton STAR or Vantage)
Experience with protocol development and operation of integrated robotic systems and automation scheduling software
Hands-on experience with assay development on automated systems: liquid handling performance qualification, biological assay optimization, and inter-/intra- assay performance validation
Able to troubleshoot and proactively maintain automation equipment
Experience with microbiology, molecular biology, flow cytometry, high content analysis, high throughput screening, genomics and sequencing, mass spectrometry, and/or any other standard life-science laboratory workflows
BS/MS in science or engineering discipline, minimum 3 years of relevant experience, PhD not require
Additional preferred skills and experience:
Software development: desktop, web, mobile, database, or embedded using any programming language
Mechanical design using CAD software and rapid prototyping with 3D printers, laser cutters, and/or CNC mills
Basic electronic circuit design, layout, and assembly
Experience with statistics and data analysis software, especially data reduction and visualization
